The original Home Mini had a two-microphone array, but the Nest Mini steps that up, giving you three total mics working together in a far-field array. That should mean improved voice recognition, better picking up your "Hey Google" queries through even more noise at home. Google famously nerfed all its original Home Minis, disabling the capacitive touch control for play/pause and activation. We hope that this time around the issue that kept some Home Minis recording you around the clock isn't an issue, as Google has brought some of that functionality back with the new model.
Unlike the Home Mini, the Nest Mini comes with a built-in wall mount. It also provides better sound, with improved bass response, although the physical speakers in both devices use 40mm drivers. Nest is a company that Google purchased and folded into their own line of smart devices. The Nest name has subsequently been attached to various devices, including an improved version of the Google Home Mini. So the Nest Mini is essentially just a slightly more expensive, and slightly better, version of the Google Home Mini. Since the Google Home Mini has all of the same functionality as the Google Home, it makes a good entry-level smart speaker.

If these steps don’t solve the issue, you’ll need to factory reset your speaker or display, then set it up again. Google swears the Home Mini sounds better than you think, but if you disagree, you can hook it up to any Chromecast-enabled speaker and play music wirelessly. The full fabric covering and shape may indicate that this device is more geared toward better sound quality. It would be nice if this speaker had 360-degree capability, meaning it can blast sound from all sides, instead of just from the front like the Google Home Max.

We also learned it may be battery-powered, based on the teaser video that shows the young girl at the end of the clip holding the speaker and asking what it is. The Google Assistant makes perfect sense on my Google Home Mini because I get to call up whatever I want in short order be it on Spotify, Netflix, YouTube, name it. I can control the lights, the smart cameras, thermostat e.t.c. A physical button on the side can disable the microphone if you feel creeped out by the unsolicited wiretapping. Although turning that off invalidates the whole reason to have a Google Home speaker at all to begin with. There’s also a tiny reset button at the bottom. You might miss it if you’re not paying attention.
