The pink, lavender, or burgundy blooms, depending on the variety, are a favorite of butterflies. This fence has a flower border on both sides to boost curb appeal. Alternating tufts of purple and green line the sidewalk, while pink flowers peek out through the fence gaps. The flowering bushes add an additional layer of privacy. Passersby can’t see the house, but they’ll still enjoy the view. Layered rows are some of the most impactful flower border ideas, offering a tidy appearance and tons of personality.

Flower Border

Romantic floral frame arranged from burgundy red and white peony, pink rose, camellia, hydrangea, anemone, orchid. This fast-growing annual blooms from spring to frost, attracting butterflies with clusters of fuzzy-looking flowers in shades of purple, blue, and pink. Shorter varieties are perfect for the front of borders and edging paths and patios.

Striped Flower Border

Bees and butterflies cannot resist the purple blooms that cover plants from early summer through fall. Peonies are a beautiful perennial flower that produces large, colorful blooms come late spring, early summer. For a more compact and slender option to grow as a border, consider 'Coral Charm' Peony—a disease resistant variety with deep coral buds.

Holiday Backgrounds

The foliage is not susceptible to downy mildew, a common problem among impatiens. White and pink flowers complement each other like peanut butter and jelly, and they pop against a lush green lawn. Evergreen shrubs break up this brilliant sea of pink. The scattered green accents tie the whole look together. Rose buckwheat produces plumes of flowers and grayish, spoon-shaped leaves that grow in clumps two feet across and a foot high; they’re great for slopes.

You'll attract bees, butterflies and admiring murmurs

Decide on the placement of the perimeter, making note of the length and width of the bed. Note any slopes, shady spots, or other areas of variation that will have to be accounted for. Then draw out the whole bed, preferably on graph paper. Heighten your garden designs by edging planting beds and pathways with flowering annuals and perennials. Start with any type of flowers that are must-haves for your border.

Some of my favorite perennial flowers for a border garden include pink peonies, blue delphinium, English lavender, sedum, campanula, and rudbeckia. There are more ideas for great flowering plants in this Flower Border Garden article. With excellent heat tolerance and unsurpassed blooming, 'Rozanne' is unlike any other hardy geranium. Adored for its almost non-stop flowering, 'Rozanne' boasts showy violet-blue flowers, a unique color among hardy geraniums.

Green and Modern

The bi-color blooms pair dark and light shades of lavender, blue, pink, purple, and white. These pest free plants haven’t always thrived in the Deep South, but newer varieties in the Summer Wave® Series and Hi-Lite™ Mix tolerate heat and humidity. Your garden aesthetic will guide you in selecting border flowers that emphasize the existing style and structure of your garden. They can be used to soften hard edges and smooth transitions in more naturalistic plantings, or to reinforce the geometry of formal designs.

Flower borders are the mainstay of ornamental landscaping. These long flower beds decorate the perimeter of a yard or pathway with a succession of gorgeous blooms throughout the growing season. Here are the basics of planting and growing flower border gardens to help you create your own flower border in your outdoor space. Sturdy evergreen foliage makes dianthus an ideal edging plant. The blue-green, grass-like leaves stand 8 to 10 inches tall year-round, but the blooms are the real draw.

Plants benefit from afternoon shade in warm climates, making them perfect for edging woodland paths. There is something romantic about a walkway lined with lavender. The silvery foliage is meant to be brushed against, releasing its floral perfume. And the countless spikes of purple-blue flowers are alive with pollinators.

The borders on this page are shown in portrait orientation but you can use them in landscape as well. Border gardens can be as narrow as two feet wide or as deep as over ten feet. The bed’s width will be one factor in planning out the layout, so take care to measure the space available and potential dimensions. Drought-tolerant Salvia, which comes in many varieties such as tall, short and chill-resistant, attracts butterflies, hummingbirds and bees.

Stonecrop is a dependable perennial that tolerates heat, drought, and poor soil. Species range from upright to sprawling, the latter of which are commonly used as groundcovers, though also make a fine edging plant. Upright varieties work well at the front edge of sunny beds.

The hybrid Phenomenal® tolerates heat and humidity, making it easier to grow in southern gardens. Spikes of speedwell look lovely poking up along the edges of paths and garden beds in summer. Flowering in shades of purple and blue, with some pink or white cultivars available, speedwell provides a vertical element to borders. The flowers attract a diversity of pollinators and are resistant to deer and rabbit browsing. Provide ample moisture and sharp drainage for this plant. Low-growing flowers are popular border choices, but you can also go big and bold.

The best border flowers for your garden include annuals and perennials that complement their surroundings while guiding the eye through the landscape. Many perennial flower plants also require root division every few years. While a single plant growing without many plant neighbors is free to expand laterally, border gardens are generally densely planted for that full-blooming appearance.

Try to apply the mulch as soon as possible after planting, as the flower plants do tend to get quite large quite quickly in the right conditions. Its much easier to get between the plants to place mulch when they are small! Be sure though not to place organic mulch directly against the woody stems of flowers such as roses, hydrangea, and lavender as it can cause rot (it holds moisture against the stem). Now it’s time to start filling in the space with ideas of what flowers to plant in which spots.

Rep Greene vows to force a vote next week on ousting House Speaker Los Angeles Times

house of rep

At their own private meeting this week, some Democrats objected to helping Johnson, particularly after he helped lead Trump’s legal challenges to the 2020 presidential election won by Democrat Joe Biden. Party leaders have said their support for sidelining Greene’s resolution is not the same as a vote for Johnson. Five of the six seats are currently held by Republicans, with four of those five in congressional districts that President Biden won in the 2020 election.

Leadership List

Massie said they were also giving Johnson time to think and suggested, again, that he resign. Johnson flatly rejected Massie's previous call for him to step down. Still, Greene said she wanted lawmakers to go on record on this issue. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene announced Wednesday she will move ahead with her attempt to oust Speaker Mike Johnson from the House's top job -- though her plan seems doomed to fail.

According to original analysis by Ballotpedia, only 26 congressional districts were predicted to be competitive in 2014. Most committee work is performed by twenty standing committees, each of which has jurisdiction over a specific set of issues, such as Agriculture or Foreign Affairs. Each standing committee considers, amends, and reports bills that fall under its jurisdiction.

Issues regarding water — including water access for agriculture, as well as water quality and water availability in wells — will also be crucial, along with healthcare access issues, said Thomas Holyoke, a professor of political science at Fresno State University. The plan, laid out in a rule that passed on Friday, was concocted to capitalize on the pools of support for each part of the $95 billion package, while preventing opposition to any one piece from taking down all of them. Prior to the election, the Republican Party had the majority in the U.S. Republicans held 246 seats compared to Democrats' 186 seats, while three seats were vacant.

The other four races — which include the seats currently held by Reps. Josh Harder (D-Turlock), Mike Levin (D-San Juan Capistrano), Young Kim (R-Placentia) and Kevin Kiley (R-Rocklin) — are in Cook’s slightly less pliable “likely Republican” or “likely Democrat” categories. Those six most competitive races are also all being targeted by both the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and the National Republican Congressional Committee, with establishment party backing likely to bring even more attention and funding into the districts. The U.S. House of Representatives has chosen the winner of a presidential election on two occasions—1800 and 1824. There is no central listing of member office public e-mail addresses. Each member of Congress establishes their office's policy related to the processing and management of e-mail.

As outlined in the Constitution, the House represents citizens based on district populations, while the Senate represents citizens on an equal state basis. This agreement was part of what is called The Great Compromise which, in turn, led to the Permanent Seat of Government Act establishing the nation’s federal capital in Washington, DC. It moved to Philadelphia in 1790 and then to Washington, DC, in 1800. Under Article I, Section 2 of the Constitution, seats in the House of Representatives are apportioned among the states by population, as determined by the census conducted every ten years. Each state is entitled to at least one representative, however small its population. During the first half of the 19th century, the House was frequently in conflict with the Senate over regionally divisive issues, including slavery.

Besides the representative from each state, there are a small number of delegates and a resident commission. There are several important leadership positions in the House of Representatives. Send comments about the Find Your Representative service to the webmaster. Please note that messages for a specific representative sent to the webmaster will not be forwarded to the representative.

Votes on the Foreign Aid Bills

The rise of the speaker's influence began in the 1890s, during the tenure of Republican Thomas Brackett Reed. While the minority leader was the head of the minority party, the majority leader remained subordinate to the speaker. The speakership reached its zenith during the term of Republican Joseph Gurney Cannon, from 1903 to 1911. The speaker's powers included chairmanship of the influential Rules Committee and the ability to appoint members of other House committees. However, these powers were curtailed in the "Revolution of 1910" because of the efforts of Democrats and dissatisfied Republicans who opposed Cannon's heavy-handed tactics. The Constitution provides that the House may choose its own speaker.[50] Although not explicitly required by the Constitution, every speaker has been a member of the House.

Representatives are usually identified in the media and other sources by party and state, and sometimes by congressional district, or a major city or community within their district. For example, Democratic representative Nancy Pelosi, who represents California's 11th congressional district within San Francisco, may be identified as "D–California", "D–California–11" or "D–San Francisco". States entitled to more than one representative are divided into single-member districts. This has been a federal statutory requirement since 1967 pursuant to the act titled An Act For the relief of Doctor Ricardo Vallejo Samala and to provide for congressional redistricting.[18] Before that law, general ticket representation was used by some states. Under the Articles of Confederation, the Congress of the Confederation was a unicameral body with equal representation for each state, any of which could veto most actions. Greene introduced a motion to vacate the speaker's chair last month.

The rematch between Republican Rep. Ken Calvert and Democrat Will Rollins is one of several 2024 California races that will help determine which party controls the House. Calvert — who has represented parts of the Inland Empire for more than three decades — narrowly staved off Rollins last cycle in a race that was far more competitive than expected. This time, Rollins will be aided by the full backing of the Democratic Party and far more fundraising support.

9 Plants That'll Make Your Southern California Garden Flourish

There are many varieties of hostas with different shades of leaves. Some are blue-green, some are almost yellow and some have striking variegation. Hostas are low maintenance, yet they give a landscape much-needed interest and texture.

With soft gray-green foliage and an abundance of blooms, catmint makes a striking border planting. Lower-growing varieties measure 12 to 18 inches tall but spread considerably wider to form a compact mound. Use them for lining sidewalks and driveways, or to add structure in more formal designs.

Future day-to-day watering will occur with the drip irrigation tubing rather than with sprinklers. Coastal gardeners will love this salt-tolerant evergreen perennial that produces a flush of bubblegum-pink flowers in spring followed by occasional summer blooms. Plants form a dense tuft of stiff grass-like foliage.

Plants thrive in dry, lean soils and tolerate heat, humidity, and drought. An abundance of blooms draws scores of butterflies, bees, and other beneficial insects to the garden. The red, yellow, pink, and orange varieties in the Milly Rock™ series are known for their compact, mounding habit and long blooming period stretching from late spring through fall.

Many of the plants bees like best have large, tubular flowers with petals that act as a landing platform. The California poppy is a sure thing--it’s the state flower, after all. Try to leave some of the spent blossoms on the flower after blooms fade, since the plants self-seed from year to year. Each of these borders is black and white but you can change the color to any color you want.

Rose Buckwheat

Generally, the tallest plants go at the back of the bed, and the shortest plants go at the front. This helps to add depth to the flower border while allowing the low-growing flowers to access sunlight (instead of being shaded behind taller flowers). This ground-hugging perennial heralds the arrival of spring with a regal display of fragrant blooms. Flowers completely cover the needle-like foliage, carpeting the garden in vibrant pink, purple, and violet-red blooms. Moss phlox is perfect for edging woodland gardens and stone paths. A long-blooming flower that enjoys hot conditions, lantana will put on a show all summer long.

Mix Colors and Textures

These aren’t just any flowers but ones that are native to Southern California and thus, drought-tolerant. See our floral picks as well as some tips for planting, then ease back into your Adirondack and wait for your fluttering, buzzing garden show to start. Sweet wedding bouquets of rose, peony, orchid, anemone, camellia, blue berries and eucaliptis leaves. Some of the files on this page are very heavy, such as the high-res watercolor borders. They can only be downloaded as PDF files and not as images. If the image download does not respond then please download it as a PDF document (the page icon).

Draw spots for these plants onto the outline map first to ensure they are included. Put the tall plants at the back and the short plants at the front. Most gardeners tend to draw a circular-oval “blob” shape where a single species of plant will go. Then label the circle with the type of plant and the color. Lastly, make a little “X” or dot where each individual plant will be located (if the cultivar/mature size is known).

Its dark purple evergreen foliage is accented with bursts of dark pink blooms in spring. Dahlias come in a range of heights, floral textures, and colors, so you're sure to find one that adds personality to your flower border. On the shorter end, dahlias reach up to 12 to 18 inches, adding a refined touch to the garden with consistent color and height. "Dahlias can also accent specific areas of the garden, as they stand 36 to 48 inches tall or even higher," Speight says. Beyond their showy blooms, one of the biggest benefits of planting dahlias is their long bloom time. These flowers blooms from early summer until the first hard frost of autumn.

Hummingbirds and pollinators are strongly attracted to these flowers. Mary Jane Duford is a quintessential Canadian gardener. An engineer by trade, she tends to an ever-expanding collection of plants. In her world, laughter blooms as freely as her flowers, and every plant is raised with a dash of Canadian grit. Before getting out the shovel, it’s time to plan your flower border garden.

When selecting border flowers for planting beds, consider how plant material can create smooth transitions between the beds and their surroundings. Along walkways, flowering plants heighten the experience of moving through the landscape. Loropetalum, specifically Purple Daydream Dwarf Loropetalum, is a versatile option for a flowering border.

This flower border idea mixes colors, textures and heights for a playful display. This modest flower border provides rich color to a yard with minimal effort. It’s perfect for gardeners who have a small, shady space and prefer an understated, classic look.

An edging option that also gives back to nature, nepeta beckons hummingbirds and butterflies to your landscape. "It softens the border's edge, is drought resistant, and the purple-and-blue blooms are simply amazing," says Speight. Plus, the pollinator plant provides an eye-catching, disease-resistant, and long-lasting accent to any border. Cutting the foliage back after the perennial blooms typically provides two to three flushes of color each season. Perennials, like veronica, are great border flowers because they come back year after year. Beeline Petite Pink Veronica has a clumping growing habit that can fill in a border area beautifully with vivid magenta blooms.

Each of our land and sea cruisetours include up to three nights at our beautiful 60-acre riverside resort.

Not being keen on big ship cruising, yet having a husband who is reluctant to rough it, a six day trip on this sturdy and surprisingly spacious vessel had to be the ideal solution. The Captain and Crew of the Discovery made us feel special during the entire voyage. Their knowledge of the region, the hidden coves, the history, and the culture, all made for a magical experience. I can truly say that this trip exceeded my already high expectations. My two sons and my father-in-law also joined and they were equally impressed. Remarkable small-ship cruises in Alaska’s Prince William Sound.

Enjoy stunning views across the Nenana River into Denali National Park from virtually anywhere on the grounds, as well as upscale dining, quality entertainment, and local shopping. While you probably won’t have time to shop when your cruise ship docks in Seward, you can pick up both kitsch and practical Alaska souvenirs when you arrive in Denali Park Village. Depending on whether you choose to take a Alaska cruise southbound or northbound, your ship will either depart or arrive in the Seward cruise port. If your southbound Alaska cruise begins in Seward, you will take your Cruisetour to destinations like Denali National Park before hopping on the cruise. If your northbound Alaska cruise starts in Vancouver and ends in Seward, you would take your Cruisetour after the cruise.

Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center

We didn’t see any on this trip but we also knew the salmon wasn’t running just yet. We hope to see them on our next Alaska cruise we booked which will be in the month of July when the salmon will possibly be running. The .8-mile trail takes you past rivers (sometimes filled with spawning salmon) and breathtaking views of Mendenhall Glacier and ends at a lovely waterfall. During the 15 minutes in each direction hike, you may spot wildlife, including moose, bald eagles, and possibly bears. The Alaska waters of the Inside Passage have excellent opportunities for whale watching.

If you only have time for one shore excursion in Juneau, it’s hard to beat the Mendenhall Glacier. Shuttle buses depart for the glacier from right beside the cruise docks, and the trip there and back again doubles as a short city tour. Just past the sign, information-style kiosks line the dock, filled with information about everything to see and do in and around Juneau. You can book last-minute excursions here, but I wouldn’t wait to book a tour, especially if your port time is limited. Keep in mind that the average summer temperatures here only reach the low- to mid-sixties. Staying dry and warm will definitely improve the happiness factor during your time ashore at the Juneau cruise port. For thousands of years, the bounty of the sea has sustained residents of southeast Alaska.

When we visited Alaska – on a one week roundtrip from Seattle on Oosterdam with Holland America Lines – we combined it with a long shore-based trip in Canada. We heard a lot of discussion about how expensive they can be, especially in Alaska and we were interested to look for alternatives. There are two locations for Tracy’s King Crab Shack in Juneau, but the main one is actually right next to the cruise ship terminal.

We docked alongside the pier with three other ships and, as you can see in the pictures, were immediately right in the centre of town. The dock area is flat with level access to the Mount Roberts lift, shops, the famous Tracy’s Crab Shack and the Red Dog Saloon as well as to the main shopping streets and museums. Downtown is less than a 5-minute walk from the closest berth at the port. You’ll have a great time on your cruise stop here engaging with locals, learning more about native Alaskan culture, and more. Remember, part of the adventure is embracing the unexpected, so while it’s important to plan, remain flexible and open to the experiences that come your way.

From there, you can take the Mt. Roberts Tramway, which provides access to the mountain. There’s also a small elevated boardwalk over a creek that runs near the visitor center. If the salmon are running, you might get to see black bears catching fish here. During August you can still see salmon swimming up the creek to spawn, with great blue herons and bald eagles. You might even come across the occasional black bear coming down to partake of the mobile feast.
